The making of my Happy Dog lino print.

In this post I am sharing with you how I created this Happy Dog lino print.

I love dogs. I grew up with a cute little black mongrel called Blackie. Absolutely adored her. She was ten years old when she died. Now I tend to cuddle other people’s dogs if they let me. Unfortunately, we can’t have a dog, because it wouldn’t be fair to our cat Bobby and my husband is actually allergic to dogs (though that doesn’t really stop him from cuddling our friends’ dog Hattie). Dogs always bring a smile to my face so I decided to create a cartoonlike dog.

I transferred the drawing on tracing paper and then onto the softcut block.

I carved this one with my Essdee and Abig tools as I didn’t have my Pfeil tools then. Originally the dog had a bone and finer lines for the fur. I changed this after various proofs. The bone just didn’t look right and I wanted the dog to be the focus. I tried to print him on various papers such as Hosho and Fabriano Unica, but in the end, I settled for the smooth Daler Rowney paper which is easier to print by hand.

In the future I plan to create a dog that’s more realistic. Other ideas I am currently working on are a fennec and a hare. I think a badger would also suit a black and white lino print very well. Have to see. Lino cutting and printing is quite a time-consuming art and I like to vary things a little. So, after a lot of mono printing, I want to play with colours again. Then there is also my clay work – my plan is to create some cat faces instead of whole sculptures.
