Handprinted turtle lino print

Turtle lino print – handprinted and painted with watercolour.

Description
This turtle lino print posed a real challenge for me. This was the first time I used traditional lino, which was quite old and sitting around in my studio for a few years.
Carving it was not easy. When I printed it, I also made the mistake of attaching it to the registration board with the wrong type of tape and it wasn’t very even as a result, which made rolling the ink rather difficult.
I ended up discarding all those prints, but played a little with colouring them with different type of paints. I ended up liking the turquoise watercolour and decided to use this for the final prints.
I went back carving a few more lines and also going over all the existing lines with my Pfeil tools, so the lines would print more clearly.
I also carved around the turtle to get rid of most of the chatter in the background.
You can find out more about how I made this print on my blog post here.
Once the prints were dry I added the watercolour to them.
For the prints I used Japanese Hosho paper and Caligo Safewash inks, which are oil based. The edition has 14 in total.
Every print is hand printed and and hand painted and therefore unique. Because of this there may be slight variations to the print shown in the image. The paper also might show some flecks – this is part of the paper.
The paper has been cut to size with a ruler and shows a little bit of a rough edge .
